When the Titanic left port, she was the largest ship ever built. She was believed to be
“practically unsinkable” due to the technological advances used in her construction.
The boat was the most luxurious ever built, and her passengers included some of the
richest, most powerful people on earth.
When she struck an iceberg only 4 days after sailing, it took less than 3 hours for the
ship to sink. Investigations showed that the Titanic had been traveling too fast in dangerous waters, that there were only enough lifeboats on board for three-fourths of the passengers, and that a nearby ship did not come to the rescue because its radio operator was asleep.
The sinking of the Titanic was the fifth worst peacetime sea disaster in history, with a
loss of over 1,500 lives. This tragedy resulted in many improved safety rules, including lifeboat space for every person on a ship, lifeboat drills, full-time radio watches, and an international ice patrol.
